The shovel was poor quality. It cracked in my son's hands the first time we took it to the beach, and cut his hands up (had to get band aids from the life guard). My son is 12, so perhaps if your child is a toddler and is gentle with toys it would be ok. A second shovel my daughters' used fared better, so perhaps the one that cracked was a lemon.
